Krišjānis Beļavskis (b. 1999, Riga, Latvia) works across sculpture, installation, and text. His practice includes theatrical, reality show-like elements and can be seen as parasitical (to borrow the term from the curator Matthew Post) not in a cynical way but rather a speculative one.

Recent projects include: 1. selecting a participant through an open call who has to sit in the studio and observe Beļavskis working. Paying them €10.00 an hour – the average gross hourly wage in Latvia (as of end of 2023). 2. Holding an auction and selling five of his workdays in the form of a USB flash drive. 3. Hiring an artist assistant and dedicating a person-specific artwork to them. If the piece is ever sold, they will receive a share of the proceeds. With an ever-shifting goal, Beļavskis tries to develop and elaborate new parasitical approaches to see where they might lead him in sculpture.

Since 2017 he has participated in several group exhibitions and performances in Latvia, Germany, Austria, Hungary and the UK. His works have been showcased in two solo exhibitions. He has also created several objects for public space. Beļavskis holds a BA in arts from the Sculpture department in the Art Academy of Latvia. He spent two semesters studying at Art Academy of Munich (ADBK München) class led by Peter Kogler and finished his studies at POST, an interdisciplinary MA program. Recipient of SPOT Exchange award 2025 at das weisse haus, Vienna.

14.08.2024 – 31.08.2024

Enter a rock from below, through the ground. Or a tree. Perhaps it has no roots down there. They appear only when the ground is dug up and your eyes can see them. While I am not looking, a bowl bounces on the kitchen table. The table is a surface. The table stands on the surface of the ground but if the table is flipped upside down, the ground stands on the table. A bucket is a blanket and to arrange means to trick.

Mixed media installation. Seperate objects: Nothing Is Still Something (1–7) (fiberglass, polyester resin, metal bolts) dimensions variable, A pickle (glass, metal, water, paper sticker) , Jungfrukallan (video, 1920 × 1080 px, 15'00”), Return Speaker! (audio, directional speaker, 45'56”)

An Art Show for Oto

Gamla Galleri Snerk, Tromsø, Norway
05.12.2024 – 05.12.2024

The poem Viena dzejolis par lietu priekšā, kas uztaisa par matainu pakausi (ENG: A Poem About the Thing in Front That Turns Into a Hairy Back of the Head) serves as the screenplay for the short film An Art Show for Oto, projected onto a window at Gamla Galleri Snerk. Written as a play, the poem remains untranslated from Latvian becoming a dedication to Oto from Latvia, who lives in Tromsø and whom I have never met. He is the only Latvian speaking person I know in the city.

    Used Springs

Group show at PAiR, Pāvilosta, Latvia
    16.08.2024 – 30.09.2024

In spring 2024, POST, hosted by Dolomiti Contemporanee and guided by artists Nicola Lorini and Kristaps Ancāns, traveled to the Dolomites in Italy to explore sites and narratives found in the mountains. From an abandoned modernist vacation village built by an energy company, to the site of the 1956 Olympic Games, ideas surrounding utopia and the different settings in which it is embedded were explored. Discoveries of these sites are now brought to a new context – Pāvilosta and PAiR*, where POST, together with Nicola Lorini, have spent time reflecting on their experiences in the Dolomites, as well as discovering local surroundings and the community.
Artists: Laura Aizporiete, Krišjānis Beļavskis, Katrīna Laura Biksone, Kristers Krūms, Lauma Muižarāja, Dena Dolores Sircova, Ieva Viese, Spāre Vītola, Nicola Lorini, Artūrs Arnis, Kristaps Ancāns, Kaspars Groševs, Amanda Ziemele.

Pop up exhibition at Kronvalda bulvāris 4, Room 12. Riga, Latvia
    07.12.2022 – 14.12.2022

Yesterday I saw a pair of black shoes, red pants, red jacket with a man inside, holding a white umbrella with a wooden handle. On the back of his head there was a wavy ponytail tied with a red hairband.
Comparing man in red to a red shipping container in the garden:
    >The shipping container does not have a white umbrella with a wooden handle
    >The shipping container does not wear red pants
    >The shipping container has no right to vote
    >The man in red does not have 8 corners. In fact, he has none
    >The man in red does not have a keyhole
    >The man in red does not have hinges for heavy metal door
    >There is a 50 % chance that container has a wavy ponytail tied with a red hairband 1 (Can not be sure, maybe it is facing the wall, must walk around it)
    >Both shipping container and man in red has an ID number
    >Both shipping container and man in red has potential to travel to Greece
This comparison is very approximate. I am looking at the shipping container from a different angle and distance. The man in red was very close to me and a bit shorter than me. Container on the other hand is good 50 meters away and I do not even see its roof. Again I only have to assume that it is there.
